Do you know who you're hiring?

Did you know that 30% of business failures are caused by employee theft?

You may be unaware that an employee has been stealing or embezzling until it has gone on for a long period of time. You may think that if an employee was doing this, you would see it taking place, hear about it, or see it in inventory results or in financial records. However, theft can go unnoticed for over three years before being discovered.

Employee theft is not only a problem for large corporations, but also for small companies with three or fewer employees as well. Most thefts are even committed by your most trusted employees.

According to the Bureau of National Affairs, 15-25 billion dollars are lost to employee theft each year, and the average cost for employee embezzlement is more than $125,000.

Workplace Violence

Workplace violence is one of the greatest liabilities for an employer today. Employees have an expectation of safety while they are at their jobs, therefore, it is the employer's responsibility to ensure that those expectations are fulfilled.

One in six violent crimes occur in the workplace. Employers have paid out 4.2 billion dollars in lost work and legal fees since 1992 due to workplace violence. Ninety-four percent of Corporate Security Directors rank domestic violence as one of the highest security threats within their company.

If an employee who commits an assault on the job is found later to have had a past pattern for violence, your company can be liable for negligent hiring. Employees with a violent past or criminal record must be identified before being hired.

Employee Screening

Drugs in the workplace

Not only is drug use a problem in the workplace, but experts say that the fastest growing problem is drug dealing. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services say that nearly 75% of people dealing drugs are employed. Most people who are using drugs in the workplace are purchasing them from a co-worker. An employer can address this problem not only by better screening of potential employees, but also by implementing a pre-employment and random drug-screening program as well.
